Why is foam used for bench cushions?

Foam also helps create a neat, finished appearance. When it is cut accurately and fitted inside a cover, it can make a bench look more complete. This is especially useful for fitted window seats, dining benches and built-in storage seating where the cushion is part of the room design.

What type of foam is best for bench cushions?

For most indoor bench cushions, a medium or firm upholstery foam is a popular choice. It should be comfortable enough to sit on but supportive enough to avoid flattening too much. A very soft foam may feel nice at first, but on a bench seat it can bottom out, which means you feel the hard surface underneath.

High density foam is often a good choice for seating that will be used regularly. Density and firmness are not exactly the same thing, but a higher density foam usually gives better durability. If the bench will be used in a busy kitchen, cafe, office or reception area, it is worth choosing a foam that can cope with repeated use.

For occasional seating, such as a decorative hallway bench, you may not need the same heavy-duty option. The best foam depends on how often the bench will be used and who will be sitting on it.

Can you use memory foam for bench cushions?

Memory foam can be used as a comfort layer, but it is not always the best choice as the only foam in a bench cushion. Memory foam responds slowly and moulds to the body. This can feel comfortable, but it may not provide the springy support many people expect from a bench seat.

How thick should bench cushion foam be?

The right thickness depends on the bench and the look you want. A thin pad of around 25mm to 50mm can add light comfort to a chair or occasional bench. For a proper seat cushion, many people choose a thicker foam, often around 75mm to 100mm or more.

Thicker foam usually gives more comfort, but you must consider the height of the bench. If the cushion is too thick, the seat may become too high and uncomfortable at a table. If it is too thin, you may feel the hard bench underneath.

Indoor bench cushions vs outdoor bench cushions

Indoor bench cushions are usually made with upholstery foam and a fabric cover. Outdoor cushions need more thought. If the cushion will be left outside or exposed to rain, standard indoor foam may absorb water and take a long time to dry.

For outdoor projects, you may need a more suitable foam or a cover designed to resist water. It is also wise to bring cushions inside when not in use, unless they are specifically made for outdoor conditions.

How to measure for bench foam

Measure the bench from side to side and front to back. If the cushion will sit inside a frame or between arms, measure the exact space available. Then decide the depth of foam you want. If you already have a cover, measure the cover and consider adding a little extra to the foam depth so it fills the cover nicely.
