How to Reupholster a Golf Cart Seat

Golf cart seats work harder than many people realise. They are exposed to movement, outdoor air, sunlight, damp clothing and regular use. Over time, the upholstery can crack, fade or tear, and the foam underneath may flatten or become uncomfortable. Reupholstering the seat is a great way to refresh the cart without replacing the full seat assembly.

What are golf cart seats made of?

Most golf cart seats have a hard base, foam padding and a vinyl or fabric cover. The base gives structure, the foam provides comfort, and the cover protects the foam while giving the seat its finished appearance. Many golf cart seats use vinyl because it is easy to wipe clean and better suited to outdoor use than many household fabrics.

The foam inside may be a medium or firm upholstery foam, depending on the seat design. If the cart is used regularly, a more durable foam may be needed to maintain support.

When should you replace the foam?

If the cover is torn but the seat still feels comfortable, you may only need new upholstery. However, if the seat feels flat, uneven or hard, the foam should be checked. There is little point fitting a smart new cover over foam that has already collapsed.

Signs of tired foam include dips, soft patches, crumbling edges and areas where you can feel the base underneath. If the foam has been wet for a long time, it may also smell damp or feel heavy.

Tools and materials you may need

For a basic reupholstery job, you may need a staple remover, pliers, a screwdriver, a sharp knife, upholstery staples, a staple gun, replacement cover material and new foam if required. You may also need spray adhesive if adding a foam layer or bonding pieces together.

Take care when using blades and adhesives. Always work in a suitable area and follow the instructions on any adhesive product.

Step 1: Remove the seat

Start by removing the seat from the golf cart. This will make the work much easier. Turn it over and look at how the cover is attached. Most covers are stapled underneath the seat base.

Remove the staples carefully with a staple remover or pliers. Try not to damage the old cover if you want to use it as a template for the new material.

Step 2: Inspect the foam and base

Once the cover is off, check the foam. If it is still firm and evenly shaped, you may be able to reuse it. If it is damaged, measure it and order replacement golf cart seat foam.

Also check the seat base. If the base is cracked or rotten, it should be repaired before you fit new foam or upholstery. A strong base is important for a neat and safe finish.

Step 3: Cut or fit the replacement foam

If you are replacing the foam, measure the seat carefully. Foam cut to size can save time and give a better finish. The foam should fit the seat base neatly without hanging over too much or leaving large gaps.

For rounded corners, shape the foam slowly. If you are doing it yourself, trim small amounts at a time. A neat foam shape will make the finished upholstery look smoother.

Step 4: Fit the new cover

Lay the new cover material face down, then place the foam and base on top. Pull the material around the edges and staple it underneath. Start in the centre of each side, then work towards the corners. Keep checking the top of the seat to make sure the fabric is smooth.

Corners can be tricky. Fold them neatly, pull firmly and staple gradually. Avoid pulling one side too hard, as this can twist the pattern or create wrinkles.
